Introducing Fumigation

Here at Dealey Environmental, we pride ourselves on three things: Being geeks on all things pest-related. Finding environmentally safe and innovative solutions to pest control. And being the best.

We provide fumigation services across the country in various environments, including agriculture, education, logistics, transport and food supply chain locations. Fumigation is highly specialised and should only be undertaken by qualified experts – which we are.

What exactly is fumigation?

Fumigation is the measured process of application, exposure and dissipation of a toxic chemical in its gaseous state to control the target pests in a product or enclosure.

The gases used are highly toxic, and it certainly isn’t just a case of releasing the gas and hoping for the best. It is a scientific and detailed process, which, when done correctly, achieves fantastic results.

A fumigation gas has three features:

  1. It is deadly to the insect
  1. It can penetrate through wrapping and dense products and materials
  1. It is non-residual once vented, making it safe for food products

How does fumigation fit with Dealey’s ethos of protecting the environment?

The majority of Dealey’s fumigation work is to support other pest control companies or companies that have not had a proactive pest control regime in place. Dealey’s approach is always to start with the target of minimising the risk of a pest infestation through a robust cleaning and maintenance regime, supported by an infrastructure review. We always start with prevention.

If an infestation has taken hold, fumigation is often the best solution to start with a “new” environment. Once fumigation has taken place, we can work with the company to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

We only use products which are non-damaging to the environment.

Who can do it?

You should always ask to see evidence of qualifications and licenses. A trained fumigation specialist will carry a Fumigation Specialist card, which not only should they offer to show you, but should be happy to show you when asked.

When is it needed?

It is used when insects are unreachable by pesticides or when pesticides are not suitable because of the environment.

This includes when bugs have burrowed into stored products such as grain, cereal, nuts, pulses and dried fruit. The benefit of using gas is that it can infiltrate any packaging and get through to the hidden bugs and eggs.

It can be used on fabric artefacts that would be damaged by pesticides, or again, are impenetrable by pesticides.

How do you know fumigation has been effective?

It’s all in the measuring. Whilst we are proud to be pest geeks, we appreciate that not everyone gets as excited as we do when we start talking about the technical aspects and finer details of our work.

We don’t just dump a load of gas in an area and hope for the best. We calculate the Concentration Time Product (CTP) which in very simple, non-geek terms, is the dosage of the fumigant required to kill the insect taking account of the time, temperature and concentration of the gas.

We calculate to know the time has been long enough, and the concentration is high enough, to kill whatever insect is infesting the food or building.

There are a range of CTPs for different insects and different gases. The fumigator must understand the insect and the gas to use the correct CTP.

If you would like to understand how we work with the CTP more, just let us know. We like nothing more than talking about our calculations and the scientific approach to fumigation.

Dealey Environmental Fumigation Services

We have the skills, experience and qualifications to be the expert that you need.

At Dealey, we have the largest fumigation team in the UK and a reputation that gives us clients across all sectors. Every fumigation treatment is certified with a clearance certificate once the fumigation is complete. This reassures buyers that infestations have been completely controlled.

Dealey is the only UK-licensed Pest Control company for Blue Fume. Blue Fume is used in transport and buildings and is ten times more effective than manmade fumigation gases whilst having a great environmental profile.

Fumigation is considered the definitive approach. It creates a clean environment which can then be maintained with the correct pest management regime.

If you lack confidence in the fumigation approach currently happening on your site, or if you feel you need to look at fumigation for the first time, just drop us a line. We are always happy to give advice and have a chat about the best solution for your pest problem.
