Rodent infestations UK – how we can rid your commercial premises of rodents

Rodent infestations tried to win the rat race, but our traps were faster

You might think that your business is safe from rats, mice and other rodents because you haven’t seen any scurrying around. But did you know that statistically speaking, you’re potentially closer to a rats nest than you are your office tea room?

Scary to think, but objectively true.

After all, most rats will live within 100-500 feet of a food or water source.
Next time you walk from your desk to your staff room or kitchenette, why not mentally assess how far the distance is? You might be surprised!

With that cheery thought at the front of your mind, we want to tell you about some work that we recently did to tackle some rodent infestations on behalf of one of our clients. As you know, we never kiss and tell when it comes to our clients, but we’ve got plenty of tales to share about how we get things done.

To give you all the deets, we’re talking to our pest technicians, Richard Waters and Geoff Hayward to find out more about how they deal with rat and mouse pest control.

Commercial rodent control is far more common than you might think

Richard, can you tell us what the core problem was?

They called us initially because they had worked with another company that hadn’t been able to adequately deal with their rodent infestation. It’s a common situation because rats and mice are incredibly difficult to deal with. You’re never dealing with one rat; a nest might typically be home for 10-12 rats, but it’s also common for some nests to house hundreds of rats.

The client ended up calling us in some distress because they desperately needed to control and reduce their rodent numbers. That makes perfect sense, after all, rats and mice can cause significant problems for commercial businesses.”

Geoff, when it comes to emergency pest control, what options do you have to deal with rodent infestations?

“It all depends on the scale of the situation. We always look at the type of business, where the rodents are living and what level of carnage they are causing before we decide our next steps.

In this case, we did our best impression of Basil the Great Mouse Detective (A Disney forgotten gem if ever there was one!) and got straight into the investigative work.

The first step with dealing with rodent infestations is to always tackle the root cause first, and that will help you decide which rodenticide to use.

Once we’d figured that out, we turned our attention to rodent proofing. This is one of the most effective things you can do, because once you’ve secured the food source, it’s much easier to direct the critters to the bait stations.”

Did that approach work?

“We managed to appropriately deal with the problem. It was very much a collaborative effort because we needed the client to listen to our advice and act accordingly. Dealing with one small rodent problem is a relatively easy fix, but responding to a rodent infestation is a much bigger beast.

The client took our advice throughout the process. They listened to us when we explained how to rat-proof a property and how to prevent mice from setting up home. This meant that we could start to control the rodent population, which stopped the breeding from getting out of hand.”

Richard, what are the complexities of dealing with rodent infestations?

“Dealing with rodent infestations isn’t a one-and-done scenario. It’s something that needs careful management to make sure that you’ve dealt with every single rodent and that every possible nest has been identified. If you don’t dot all of the i’s and cross all of the t’s, you’ll very quickly find yourself back in the same place, feeling stressed, overwhelmed and overrun by rodents.”

Was the client happy with the outcome?

“They were thrilled. After a few false starts from their previous experience, we’d managed to deal with the problem at hand.

What they needed (apart from the rat catching!) was for someone to talk to them openly and honestly about the scale of the problem. They needed to know how to deal with the problem right now, but also how to prevent it from happening again.

We like to be that hand-holding, reassuring presence. The one who will make you realise that you’re not doomed, in fact quite the opposite!

What we love is seeing the transformation in our clients. When they call us, we can sense the pressures that they are under. We can see how stressed they are and how panicked they are that their rodent infestation is causing significant problems. But by the end of their journey, their body language is completely different. They are relieved, stress-free and ready to start focusing on other priorities.”
