Snakes on a plane might be easy for Samuel L Jackson to deal with, but did you know that we are the ultimate protagonists when it comes to aircraft fumigation?
We know you’re secretly fascinated by how we work with commercial businesses to get rid of any pest problems. Call it a morbid curiosity or, as we prefer, a naturally healthy interest in entomology; we know you want to know who we work with and what pest control solutions we can offer to businesses like yours.
We’re proud of the work we do, but we understand you want us to remain your secret superheroes – no one wants to admit they have a pest control problem.
That’s why we’re happy to keep our lips sealed and our bait containers wide open.
But we can tell you about the stories behind our working practices.
We can explain what services we offer and how we take every step possible to minimise any disruption for your business.
To explain more, our Sales Manager Karen tells us about one of our recent fumigation projects.
Aircraft fumigation gets rid of unwanted and unwelcome passengers
Karen, can you tell us why we recently needed to provide a client with aircraft fumigation?
“We were contacted by a client who had an issue with rodents and cockroaches aboard their aircraft. Clearly, these little blighters had sneaked past passport control because they were most certainly unwelcome. If a passenger had spotted them, it could have caused serious health, safety and reputational problems for the aircraft carrier.
No one wants to go on holiday and come back with critters in their suitcase, but even worse, no one wants to risk rodents chewing the wires in the plane when you are 30,000ft in the air!”
That sounds terrifying – what options did you have available to tackle the aircraft pest control problem?
“The aircraft carrier was aware there was a problem, and they were tackling the issue by using a CO2 fumigation process. This can be an effective way of tackling plane fumigation issues, but it is lengthy and time-consuming.
We would only recommend it when you have time on your side.
There’s very minimal turnaround time between a plane landing at one airport before it needs to take off again and head off elsewhere. So, any lengthy fumigation will keep that aircraft grounded, which will almost certainly result in heavy delays and financial implications. I don’t know about you, but if I’m heading off on holiday, I wouldn’t be happy if my trip was delayed because of an onboard bug problem.
In this instance, there was a secondary problem because the CO2 fumigation process had failed twice. It wasn’t comprehensively tackling the issue of rodents roaming around the cabin. Rodents are brilliant creatures, but I wouldn’t trust them to be a copilot, that’s for sure!”
What could Dealey Environmental offer that others hadn’t?
“Our knowledge of fumigation told us to go straight in with our Bluefume service. It’s a rapid-acting fumigant that has fantastic disinfestation effects due to its excellent distribution and penetration properties. Bluefume will kill all bugs, pests and rodents at every stage of their life cycles. Without being too specific (and gory), once the fumigation was complete, we had specific methods we could use to make sure any rodents were quickly found and retrieved. No one wants to smell any unpleasant odours as they are travelling halfway around the world!
Dealey holds the exclusive license for Bluefume in the UK. So, it was a no-brainer that we were able to help this client successfully – the fact this particular treatment had a 100% success rate meant the aircraft was only grounded for 6-12 hours.”
That seems like a very quick timeframe to deal with an aircraft fumigation!
“We judge our success not just on how effective our pest control solutions are but also on how quickly we can get our clients back up and running.
Aircraft carriers are very different to other businesses because there’s a huge knock-on effect to any downtime – not just the passenger frustrations but also within air traffic control and the financial implications that can come from delays and grounded aircraft.
We never lose sight of this – in fact, we’re constantly challenging ourselves to work harder and quicker every single time. If our treatment hadn’t been 100% successful, there could have been significant risk factors once the plane had taken off, so it wasn’t your standard health and safety issues – if a rodent had chewed through the wrong wire in the air, it could have been critical.”
Wow, that sounds like you really made a difference to the client
“We were really proud of this project because the proof was in the process – the aircraft was back in the air, successfully decontaminated and disinfested within 12 hours. In addition to solving the initial problem, we also offer residual treatments to prevent it from happening again.
If you think back to just five years ago, when the whole world closed due to the pandemic, it’s much easier to explain how diseases can rapidly spread across the globe without effective pest control processes in place.
Our plane fumigation and aircraft disinfestation services are essential for any travel company or cargo container, which is why we are sharing our story. No one wants to go through that again, so the quicker and easier it is to reduce those pest problems, the better.”
Presumably, the client was happy with the outcome.
“Absolutely – in fact, it wasn’t just the reduced downtime and pest elimination they were happy with. It was a smooth process from start to finish. Dealing with cockroaches, bed bugs, and rodents is never a pleasant experience, and when the stakes are so high, the stress levels can go through the roof.
That’s why we pride ourselves on how we can be the instant calming solution you’re looking for. Our role is to come in, assess the situation and cheerfully sort it out for you with minimal fuss or stress. In fact, we won’t just chat about the technical concerns aircraft carriers and airports might have. We’ll happily share our detailed knowledge about all the bugs and pests you’re trying to eliminate!
We admit we’re a chatty bunch – but like any other scary situation, knowledge is power. The more information you have about the problem, the easier it can be to tackle it effectively!
In this instance, the client sent us a really kind message outlining their thanks, and they also promised to share our details with their cabin presentation coordinator, who deals with these kinds of issues from an operational perspective. We can’t ask for anything more than that!”
